THE police of North Garo Hills (NGH) had an encounter on Thursday with suspected Liberation Achik Elite Force (LAEF) militants, which led to a protracted firefight. However there were no reported casualties from the police though the same could not be confirmed from the side of militants.
According to information received, the Officer in Charge (OC) of the Bajengdoba police station received a tip off about the presence of militants near the village of Mansingre under the police station. Acting on the tip off, the battalion staff along with the CI-Operations conducted a raid to locate the militants.
“They suddenly came upon some militants and there was an exchange of fire between us and them. They took advantage of the largely populated area and ran towards the nearby Mansingre jungle. There were no casualties from our side however, the casualties from the side of the militants could not be ascertained”, said the Superintendent of Police (SP), NGH, JFK Marak.
“We suspect them to be a part of LAEF and one of them is suspected to be injured though there has been no confirmation”, said Marak.
Speaking on the resurgence of the LAEF, Marak said, “They have regrouped and we believe they have begun to work together with Bodo militants. Ravan Basumatary is working in close tandem with the group now and as such has strengthened themselves,” added Marak.
