Police on the move

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t is encouraging to now that Kohima Police has achieved zero case pendency as reported in the local dailies. Usually, police cases take longer than usual to dispose and are compounded by the backlog of cases to be cleared of by the courts. It is indeed the first unit in the history of Nagaland Police to observe a no case pendency day with all the cases registered under the seven police stations in the district having been cleared off.According to Superintendent of Police (SP), Kohima, Rothihu Tetseo, all the cases registered under the DEF (District Executive Force) till June 2013 have been cleared off with the collective efforts of concerned investigating and supervisory officers.
For effective crime control and prevention new police stations had been created in Kohima District keeping in view the increase in crime rates along with growth in population. For, at most other times, anything that goes wrong in the law and order situation, the police are at the receiving end for alleged negligence, dereliction or various other reasons in the line of duty. It is not so easy to be in the line of police work and this is what few people try to understand.
Just a few days ago, the Nagaland Government Higher Secondary Teachers Association (NGHSSTA), Mon, had lamented that in the event of poor performance of students in their examinations, it is the teachers who have to take the flak. The association did try to explain the shortcomings of the education department.
Similarly, the police department in general has had to make do with whatever personnel and resources at its command and play the cards as dealt out to them. A senior Police officer once said that wherever and whenever social life goes on, the police will more often than not, be called upon to take a hand, much to the annoyance or displeasure of some disgruntled people. But police is a necessary institution. Seeing police personnel on duty at any time of day or night is a comfortable sight to respectable citizens.
Like medical hospitals that are necessary for sick people, so also the police stations are a sort of hospital for the crooks, vagabonds, thieves and all other criminals of varying degrees. Hospitals should be avoided unless one is too sick and the police stations are to be given a wide berth by any upright citizen.
The Kohima police have also announced that it has formally launched Crime and Control Tracking and Networking System (CCTNS) and one case has already been charge sheeted accordingly. The Zero Case Pendency Day was initiated by the SP to encourage the men in uniform in their line of duty and also to seek people’s suggestion particularly the District Administration to enhance performance of police personnel..
During the occasion which was attended by DGP Besusayo Kezo and other senior police officials at the SP conference hall at Kohima, 141 police officers and jawans were awarded for exceptional conduct during duty. The most disposed cases award went to ASI Chiwasie Nyusou and UBSI Imsutoshi was awarded for the most sensitive case disposed.
In a vitiated atmosphere of crime, protests, and thefts the news emitting from the police department is significant for the largely cynical attitude of the public to change towards the law enforcing agency.
