Dimapur, Sep. 10 (EMN):  Nagaland Pig farmers Association (NPFA) held an awareness seminar on the current scenario on the piggery sector in Nagaland in its office near Dimpaur Government College on September 10.

While speaking at the seminar as resources person, veterinary surgeon, Dr. KN Zebemo Humtsoe, stated that meat is an integral part of Naga diet adding that an amount of INR 221.92 crore worth of meat is imported from other states.

Considering the potential of meat business in Nagaland, he encouraged the farmers to concentrate on the trade for their economic uplift. Humtsoe also encouraged on producing indigenous pigs such as Suho pigs, which has a strong diseases resistance compare to exotic breed.

Humtsoe also informed that the department would set up a quality control laboratory in order to deliver quality and hygienic meat for consumption.

Speaking on the occasion, animal husbandry and veterinary service Dimapur VAS, Dr. Bocto Sumi explained the importance of biosecurity implementation measures that would reduce the risk of spreading disease. In this regard, he urged the pig farmers to maintain proper balance ration, vaccination etc.

Sumi also explained the types of diseases that affect the pigs such as African Swine flu and classical swine flu and the importance how to protect the pigs from such diseases.

The welcome address and introduction was delivered by the president of NPFA, Rev. N Subong Aier, while the vote of thanks was delivered by secretary of NPFA, Achum Ngullie.
