Over 12,000 fake N95 masks seized from Bengaluru warehouse

Bengaluru, Mar 31 (PTI): Over 12,000 fake N95 face masks were seized from a warehouse here by the Central Crime Branch, police said on Tuesday.

The filtering masks have been in demand since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, which has claimed 32 lives and affected 1,251 people in the country.

“So far, the accused has sold 70,000 masks at a cost of Rs 1.05 crore,” police said in a statement.

The warehouse in Kalyan Nagar was raided on Monday night and 12,300 fake N95 masks worth Rs 20 lakh were seized, it said.

There is a shortage of these masks in the market. Complaints have also been received by authorities that masks are being sold at exorbitant prices.

Karnataka govt clarifies on use of mask

shops and establishments insisting on people to wear masks, Karnataka government on Tuesday clarified that as a rule every one need not wear a mask.

The Commissionerate of Health and Family Welfare Services in an advisory said a person is suppose to wear mask only when he or she has symptoms of cold or cough or fever or any other respiratory problem.

It said a person who is caring for COVID-19 suspect or confirmed patient should wear mask.

Also, a health worker who is attending to a patient with respiratory symptoms should wear a mask.

The advisory also noted that those treating or handling COVID-19 suspects or patients need to wear N95 mask, while others can wear triple layer surgical mask.

The advisory from the Commissionerate has come amid shops and establishments, also police on road insisting people to wear masks when they venture out.
