The Western Angami Public Organisation (WAPO) has condemned the March 5 post-poll violence incident at Science College area, Jotsoma, where some employees of PHE department were allegedly physically assaulted by some “unscrupulous persons.”

The organisation in a condemnation note stated that it condemned any act of violence, be it pre-poll or post-poll, and warned that such acts of violence that smears and tarnishes the good image of the entire area would not be tolerated.

Stating that the area has the distinction of being a violence-free area in all the earlier State General Elections since 1964, WAPO said the best tradition of peaceful atmosphere that went with every general election was damaged by the post-poll violence.

“With a view to set as a deterrent for future recurrence, we demand from the concern authority to book and punish the perpetrators as per the appropriate section of law,” WAPO stated.

The NDPP Kohima region condemned the ‘cowardly act allegedly perpetrated by some youths near Jotsoma on Feb. 27, and by Melie and his accomplices on March 5, at PHED Quarter (Water Reservoir, Science College Jotsoma).

‘Such acts go against our very own culture and against any established rule of law. Regrettably, the senseless act which could be the first recorded post-poll violence in the entire district since statehood, has brought shame and tarnished the image of the peace loving citizens of the district. Such act deserves outright condemnation from all right thinking sections of people of the district, so that the shameful act is nipped in the bud,’ it read.

It urged upon the law enforcing agency to immediately act upon the FIRs lodged and arrest and book the culprits as per provisions of the law.

Meanwhile, the Jotsoma Village Council (JVC) also stated that the alleged physical assault on the individuals were “uncalled for”, adding that it does not endorse such incidents and strongly condemned the same.
