Dimapur, April 10 (EMN): National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) Nagaland unit expressed disapproval  at the statement made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah that Hindi should be accepted as an ‘alternative to English and not local languages’.

In a press release, NSUI stated that it is not ‘averse to anybody willing to learn Hindi but it should be optional and not compulsory’.

“A diverse country like India with different culture, traditions and languages should not be diluted with such cheap tactics,” it read.

It also said that the National Education Policy 2020 states that “no language will be imposed on any state”.

It reminded that education is a state subject and the “Centre should not try to test the waters to disrupt the harmony of the country by going overboard”.

The Union also sought clarification from the chief minister and advisor for School Education on the statement made by the Home minister that all the eight northeastern states had agreed to make Hindi compulsory in schools up to Class 10.

It said that Principal Director of School Education Shanavas C had “clarified that all reports carried by the media are false. The NSUI Nagaland questions whether the Home Minister of India is lying or the School Education department is at fault?” it read.

“While promotion of any language is encouraged, the imposition of a particular language will not be tolerated at all and will be objected tooth and nail. The NSUI Nagaland further cautions the state government not to take any such decisions which will greatly hamper and affect the career of thousands of students,” it added.
