Dimapur, July 22 (EMN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has expressed shock over media reports that cell phones of important personalities, including former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and his office staff were allegedly under surveillance using Pegasus spyware, in the run-up to the 2019 general elections.

A press release issued by NPCC president, K Therie stated that Israeli company NSO Group sells its products to “government agencies to combat terrorism and other serious crimes” but the BJP government had “misused this tool to infringe on the civil liberties of the individuals” by covertly accessing their personal data.

“Prime Minister Modi is responsible for spying on India’s security forces, judiciary, cabinet ministers, opposition leaders, journalists and other activists through a foreign entity’s spyware,” read the press release from Therie.

He went on to demand that Union Home Minister Amit Shah be sacked “for his failure to uphold the provisions of the Constitution of India which he has sworn to uphold”.

“The tapping scandal is a blatant reflection of the loss of ideas and wisdom of the BJP Govt. which has stooped so low as to snoop for others’ ideas,” the press release added.
