International passenger detained for gold smuggling

Panaji, Nov. 8 (PTI): Customs officials today seized gold worth Rs 33 lakh from an international passenger on his arrival at the Dabolim airport in Goa from Jeddah. A Customs department spokesman said the international passenger, travelling by an Oman Air flight, was found to be carrying 1,240 gms of gold worth Rs 33 lakh. The seizure was made during the wee hours and the passenger, whose identity was not disclosed, has been detained for attempting to smuggle gold, he said. He was carrying the precious metal in the “stroller bag metal frame”, the spokesman said, adding the passenger had arrived from Jeddah via Muscat.

EC defers hearing on JD(U) symbol dispute until Nov 13

New Delhi, Nov. 7 (PTI): The Election Commission (EC) today heard the Janata Dal (United) dispute for election symbol between factions led by Nitish Kumar and Sharad Yadav and posted the matter for next hearing on November 13. Javed Raza, a general secretary with the Yadav faction, said Supreme Court lawyer and Congress leader Kapil Sibal argued their case before the full bench of the commission. However, JD(U) general secretary Sanjay Jha said an overwhelming number of the party’s elected leaders and members in the national council have supported Kumar, the Bihar chief minister. The rift in the JD(U) had widened this August, when Yadav claimed that the “original party” was with him and termed Kumar’s joining hands with the BJP as “betrayal of the people’s mandate” in Bihar.

Coming soon! Airport at Lakshadweep’s Minicoy Island

New Delhi, Nov. 8 (PTI): The Island Development Agency (IDA) decided today to develop an airport at Minicoy Island to boost tourism and promote tuna fishing industry for improving livelihoods in Lakshadweep. The IDA was set up on June 1 this year, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s review meeting for the holistic development of islands. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh chaired the second meeting of the IDA here today. It was noted that site development potential reports have clearly mapped and delineated environmentally-sensitive zones in the project islands, and considering the unique maritime and territorial bio-diversity of the islands, enhanced connectivity has been recommended as one of the key priorities, according to a press release issued by the home ministry.

Stalin scotches speculation on DMK tying up with BJP

Madurai, Nov. 8 (IANS): Scotching speculation that DMK was getting close to BJP, M.K. Stalin on Wednesday said the “dream” of some people of such a possibility cannot be realised and warned the Modi government that DMK will not be cowed down by any threats in its opposition to the Centre on demonetisation and other issues. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling on his ailing father and DMK chief M. Karunanidhi in Chennai on Monday was a “humanitarian” gesture and nothing more than that.

Two minors boys drown near school; principal suspended in UP

Gonda (UP), Nov. 8 (PTI): The principal and a teacher of a government primary school were suspended after two children drowned in a pond in Saijapul village, an official said today. Surendra (6) and Arvind (8) drowned in a pond near the school on November 6 when they had gone to relieve themselves as the toilet was not in a working condition and their supervision was unsatisfactory, Basic Siksha Adhikari (BSA) Santosh Kumar Dev Pandey said. Principal Surendra Kumar and assistant teacher Priyanka Yadav of the school are responsible prima facie for the incident, he said. Both of them have been suspended, he added.
