Kohima, Oct. 1 (EMN):
Kohima witnessed an unusual ease in traffic on Friday as ‘new parking plan for Kohima town’ came into effect from October 1 onwards.

According to the new parking arrangement issued by the Kohima Smart City Development Ltd., NST to Razhu Point and Razhu point to Khuochiezie (Local ground) have been designated as ‘No Parking’ zone. However, a parking space has been arranged at Old MLA hostel site and Khuochiezie as an alternative.

Dziesetuonuo Kedistu, a traffic personnel deputed at Old NST and Razhü Point stretch, said that traffic was smooth and easy on Friday. She said that it felt like Sunday had arrived early as there was no traffic jam.

She informed that the most of the drivers she had come across on the day were following the new parking plan. She added that volunteers from the Kohima Village Youth Organisation were assisting them to effectively implement the new arrangement.

The 1st Officer-in-Charge, Kohima North Police Station (Traffic), Inspector Samuel Ao, said that the new parking rule had just started and it would take some time for people to get used to it.

People (drivers), particularly those not from Kohima and those who were not aware of the new parking plan, were a bit confused but they will eventually come to know, he said.

He said that the traffic was the same even with the new parking plan in place but the traffic would be eased as vehicular movement from the old parking zone would be less.

He explained that the whole stretch (Kohima main town) is a commercial area with one-way traffic. Prior to the new parking rule, traffic is disrupted for about 10 to 15 minutes whenever a vehicle arrives or exits a parking space, but this issue will be eased now.

He further informed that three police personnel are normally deputed along the particular stretch of road but two more had been deputed because of the ongoing ‘Kohima street carnival’.

Meanwhile, a traffic police said that the new parking rule had solved lot of problems. He also urged the drivers not to over speed and the pedestrians to be alert while crossing the roads.
