Kohima, April 4 (EMN): Nagaland’s first woman Rajya Sabha MP, S Phangnon Konyak took oath as parliamentarian in the house led by M Vankiah Naidu, Chairman of the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Konyak took oath along with five other parliamentarians – Pabitra Margherita from Assam; Rwangwra Nrazary, Assam; Jebi Mather from Kerala; Sandosh Kumar, Kerala and A A Rahim from Kerala.

It may be mentioned that the new MP was elected unopposed, following the completion of tenure of KG Kenye from April 2.

Setting the trend to become the first Naga women MP in the upper house, clad in traditional attire of the Konyak Naga tribes, she took the oath of affirmation in the ongoing second part of the budget session.

It may be recalled that after three decades, the state of Nagaland had sent a woman parliamentarian following the Lok Sabha MP, Rano M Shaiza in the 1970s.

Legislators from Nagaland — Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton; Minister Jacob Zhimomi; Advisor Mmhonlumo Kikon and Nagaland’s Lok Sabha MP Tokheho Yepthomi — accompanied the lone Rajya Sabha member during the swearing-in ceremony.
