Dimapur, Nov. 18 (EMN): Commemorating the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, Nagaland University, Lumami headquarters, celebrated ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’ on November 15 by organising a debate competition on the “Contribution of Janajati heroes in freedom struggle.”

Prof. MK Sinha, NU dean of School of Social Sciences and chief guest, pointed out that the government of India decided to observe ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’ on the birthday of Birsa Munda to honour the memory of the tribal peoples’ contribution to the Indian freedom struggle. Prof. Sinha lamented that history did not focus on their contributions in the freedom struggle, stated an update from the university.

He stated that tribal people were not only exploited by the Britishers but also by the money lenders and merchants. He added that tribal people were ruthlessly suppressed and harassed.

He stated that on June 30, 1855, two Santali leaders namely Sidhu Murmu and Kanhu Murmu started an agitation which turned violent, which continued despite attempt by Britishers to suppress the agitation. He mentioned about Rani Gaidinliu from Manipur, who was put behind bars because she raised her voice against the Britishers. In conclusion, he stated that tribal heroes have contributed hugely towards the Indian freedom movement.

A total of eleven students took part in the debate competition. They mentioned some tribal heroes such as Birsa Munda, Rani Gaidinliu, Tilka Manjhi, Sidhu Murmu, Kanhu Murmu etc. They mentioned that Birsa Munda was an Indian tribal freedom fighter belonging to the Munda tribe, who led a mass movement in Bengal presidency (present Jharkhand) during the British rule of the late 19th century, thereby making him an important figure in the history of Indian Independence movement.

Students also mentioned Rani Gaidinliu, who led the Naga soldiers to fight against the Britishers and was sentenced to life imprisonment by the British rulers.

They also agreed that it should be everyone’s responsibility to remember those great tribal heroes. They added that their stories should be included in the school curriculum so that future generations would not forget their sacrifices.

In a feedback on the debate, Prof. Upasana Bora, head of Chemistry department, attributed to a fault in the education system that people are forgetting the tribal heroes.

The first prize of the debate competition was won by Khotai, while the second prize was shared by Rose Mozhii and Vikhelhou Nagi, and the third prize was shared by Namsong N and Salonger Jamir.
