Nagaland: Segregated waste bins distributed to schools in Longleng

Segregation waste bins being distributed to the schools during an awareness campaign on Swachhta Hi Seva in the DC’s conference hall in Longleng town on September 27.

Dimapur, Sep. 27 (EMN): An awareness campaign on ‘Swachhta Hi Seva (Cleanliness is service) for all the head of government offices and educational institutions, president of LTW, presidents of all wards, chamber of commerce, Phom People’s Council (PPC), Phom Students’ Conference (PSC), Phomla Hoichem and churches was held on September 27 in the DC’s conference hall, Longleng.

In his keynote address, D Robin, SDO (C) in-charge ADC and administrator of Longleng Town Council (LTC) stated that ‘Swachhta Hi Seva’ is not confined to the administration, LTC or one particular agency but a joint responsibility of all the citizens of India irrespective of cast, sex, religion, agencies etc. He informed that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded the global goalkeeper award for initiating the programme by his government.

He also stated that under the programme, segregation waste bins to the schools and churches and cash to all wards were distributed for construction of waste bins in their respective wards. He added that winner of the best ward would be awarded, a DIPR report stated on Friday.

Informing on harmful effects of plastic to health and environment, Robin asserted that Longleng, being is a small town, could be a role model for others if all the stakeholders and responsible citizens work effectively with mutual understanding. He also appealed to the women folks to come up with innovative ideas with local production to replace the plastic bags.

EAC Longleng headquarters and nodal officer of Swachhta Hi Seva, Ihoilung Chuilo, spoke on cleanliness. He also spoke on harmful chemical contains of plastic in the food, contamination of ground water, degradable age of various types of plastic and facts and figures of plastic waste in the country and its effect on the environment.

Also stating that mankind has created a huge gap with the nature, Ihoilung called upon the gathering to protect nature. He further appealed to create maximum awareness to the community and extend all cooperation and support to the administration and LTC to make the district a plastic free-zone.

The LTC administrator gave away cash to all the wards and distributed segregation waste bins to the schools. Churches in Longleng will be given waste bins in the second phase.
