Nagaland legislators attend international conference on water issue
Dimapur, Sep. 28 (EMN): Several lawmakers and officials from mountain states of India, including Nagaland attended international conference called Water Future Conference: Towards a Sustainable Water Future from September 24 to the 27th held at Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Grand-Ball Room Hotel Sheraton, Bengaluru.
An update by DIPR informed that Deputy Speaker of NLA Sharingain Longkumer, advisor to IT, Science and Technology Mmhonlumo Kikon, representative of Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI) Alemtemshi Jamir and officials from the departments of Soil and Water conservation and Geology & Mining attended the event.
Organised by Sustainable Water Future Programme of Future Earth in partnership with Divacha Centre for Climate Change at IISc, the conference addressed the current state of global water resource challenges, future pathways and scenarios, and different technological, institutional solutions to accelerate the implementation of water related sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the 2030 agendas targets.
A special session on water solutions for the 21st century in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) was held on the sideline of the conference on September 24 and 25th with the initiative of IMI secretariat. It focused on the urgent need for the a better policy framework at the IHR’s regional and state levels for integrated water conservation, governance, and management policy leading to effective water solutions to address the looming crisis of the 21st century. It will be a forerunner to a high-level political event called the Budapest UN Water Summit to be held in October, the update added.
The two-day event included paper presentations from researchers and experts, and two high penal discussions and intricate negotiation initiatives- one on parliamentarians/ legislators dialogue on water policy for the IHR and the other on establishment of water solutions lab for the region in Northeast. A forum on IHR’s parliamentarians and legislators committee was set up and MoU on setting up of Water Solutions Centre for the north-eastern states was signed during the conference.
