Nagaland Legislative Assembly passes two government bills

Kohima, March 22 (EMN): Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) passed two government bills — Nagaland village and tribal councils (Fifth Amendment) bill (2022), and Nagaland Groundwater (regulation and control of development and management) bill (2020) on Tuesday.

The bills were introduced on the floor of the house on the second day of the 11th session of NLA on Monday and were passed through a voice vote.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio introduced Nagaland village and tribal councils (Fifth Amendment), bill, 2022 which seeks to amend the Nagaland Village and Tribal Council Act, 1978, expected to be extended to whole of Nagaland. The bill pointed out the need to change the qualification criteria for becoming a member of village council to check the possibility of non-indigenous and non-permanent residents becoming a member of the council and so on.

Meanwhile, the minister of Geology and Mining, Soil and Water Conservation, V Kashiho Sangtam introduced Nagaland Groundwater (regulation and control of development and management) bill, 2020. Under the bill, the main database on groundwater will be maintained including the check on permit for extraction and use.   

Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday also introduced ‘Nagaland Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (fifth Amendment) Bill, 2022’ to be passed on March 24.
