Dimapur, Dec. 10 (EMN): The Konyak civil society organisations (CSOs) have demanded the government of India (GoI) and the special investigation team (SIT) to book those responsible for the “intelligence negligence” that led to the loss of 14 civilian lives in Mon district and award a befitting punishment as per the law.

A joint press statement by the Konyak Union (KU), Konyak Students’ Union (KSU), and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) also condemned the military intelligence agency for tainting the Oting massacre on December 4 by deliberately misinforming the government of India about the incident.

It urged the SIT to conduct a fair investigation and present its report before December 25 so that the people could celebrate Christmas with the knowledge of justice being delivered and pave the way for a peaceful atmosphere.

The Konyak civil society organisations also appealed to the deputy commissioner of Mon to immediately allocate a site at AR Camp, Mon headquarters, for construction of “Genocide Memorial Park for Oting and Mon town massacre”.

Fight against AFSPA

The civil society organisations also appealed to all the chief ministers, students bodied and youth organisations of north-eastern states that are under the AFSPA to fight the draconian law, which has been hampering peace in the region, and repeal it.

Fourth day of mourning

As the week-long mourning enters the fourth day, the Konyak apex bodies said that it will meet the families of the Mon firing victims at Oting, Jakphang and Chi village today, Saturday.

It has also called a press conference at 12 pm today at the Konyak Union office to provide “clear-cut information” about the tragic incident and the series of events that unfolded.

It clarified that the restriction on media fraternity at the ground zero was due to misinterpretation of facts and politicising the incident. It went on to urge the media to relay the truth to the world and not misinform.
