KOHIMA, OCTOBER 21

NAGALAND joined the country in paying homage and honour to the sacrifices made by 576 police personnel, including five from the state during the last one year by holding the Police Commemoration Parade here on Monday.Addressing the solemn occasion, DGP Nagaland Besesayo Kezo said that the history of the day traces back to October 21, 1959 when a patrol party of CRPF, led by SI Karan Singh and 10 jawans guarding the national frontiers were ambushed and killed by Chinese forces at Hot Springs, Ladakh.
The bravery and resultant sacrifices of jawans fighting at 16,000 feet altitude in extremely cold condition and against all odds was an epitome of the rarest of the rare courage.
Acknowledging the supreme sacrifices made by 576 police personnel during the year, he said commemorating the day reminds about the dangers and responsibility involved in discharging the duties as police personnel.
He said police personnel are not only for parading or guarding VIP houses or simply conducting movement of vehicles as traffic police but “we are prepared for any responsibility including guarding the national frontier”.
“Police service is a 24 hour job and everyday on the war front,” he said.
The names of the 576 police personnel, which include 11 Deputy Superintendent of Police/Assistant Commandant and above and 565 non-gazetted officers and below died during the last one year were also read out on the occasion to acknowledge with pride their supreme sacrifice.
The list of five police personnel from Nagaland who sacrificed their life in line of duty are as follows: Havildar Temsu Ao of 10th IR Bn, UBC Lalkholen Kuki of DEF Peren, UBC Bapeu Zeliang of DEF Peren, Constable R. Jenithung Lotha of 12th IR Bn and Chingbong Konyak of 12th IR Bn.
All the battalions and dignitaries also paid floral tributes on the cenotaph in remembrance and honour of the departed soul.
