Dimapur, June 29: The wide array of languages being spoken in Nagaland is a natural corollary of the diverse number of tribes in the state. It comes as no surprise that Nagaland has been ranked second in the list of states with the highest number of tribal languages spoken in India.
According to the census 2011 data—recently released by the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, Union Ministry of Home Affairs—Nagaland scored 6.3 in the effective number of languages (ENL) spoken in the country.
Moreover, the census showed that the ENL in many of the Northeast states were more than three while it was comparatively less in the rest of the country.
Manipur ranked first with 8.8 ENL, followed by Nagaland with 6.3, and a tie for third place between Sikkim and Assam with 4.7 ENL. Jharkhand came in fifth with 4.5 ENL.
