Nagaland: Eight crimes committed against senior citizens in 2021

Nagaland recorded a total of eight crimes against senior citizens (60 years and above) in 2021, according to the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), while a total of 16 cases were reported in 2019 and 11 cases in 2020.

As per the 2011 census, the population of senior citizens in the state is one lakh.

Theft against senior citizens was the highest with a total of five cases and one case each of kidnapping and abduction, fraud and other Indian Penal Code (IPC) crimes.

Among the Northeastern states, Assam reported 150 cases, Manipur and Tripura reported eight cases each, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram reported five cases each, Meghalaya reported three cases and Sikkim reported two cases of crimes against senior citizens during 2021.

Under the police disposal of crime against senior citizens, the report showed that two cases were true but had ‘insufficient evidence or no clue’, and four cases were charge-sheeted during the year.

Data showed that a total of six cases had been disposed off by the police, meanwhile there were 12 cases pending investigation at the end of the year.

Under court disposal of crimes against senior citizens, it showed that there are 15 cases pending trial from the previous year and four cases sent for trial during the year. Thus, total cases pending trial at the end of the year was 15.

Under disposal of persons arrested for crimes against senior citizens, 10 persons had been arrested and four charge-sheeted, meanwhile there were no records of persons convicted, discharged or acquitted according to the data.
