Dimapur: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has appealed to the people to conserve energy by ‘developing a culture for preference for various renewable non-petroleum energy sources as well as adopt, popularise and use greener and cleaner forms of power’.

In a message, Rio said that India is the third largest energy consumer in the world and it is expected to double by 2040 considering the ever-increasing demand.

He added that ‘a major portion of our budget allocation, by necessity, has to be diverted from developmental programmes to defray the import cost of petroleum’.

“The conservation of petroleum resources, consequently, becomes the first step for sustainable development of our country. It is, therefore, vital that each and every petroleum consuming citizen of the country learn to conserve petroleum and turn to renewable energy to effectively contribute towards building a new and Atmanirbhar Bharat,” read the message.

Rio lauded the Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA), under the aegis of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, for observing Sanrakshan Kshamta Mahotsav (SAKSHAM) 2023 across the country on the theme “Energy Conservation towards Net Zero” from April 24 to May 8, to bring awareness on energy conservation among the people.

He informed that the PCRA, along with Oil Marketing Companies, will be organising various events across Nagaland in order to reach out to various sections of society to bring awareness about energy conservation for a better future.

“I convey my best wishes to PCRA and their officials for successful conduct of SAKSHAM-2023,” he added.
