Dimapur, June 25 (EMN):
Nagaland has constructed contour trenches covering a total area of 70 hectare in 65 villages under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) RAS contour trenching scheme from 2021 till March 2022.

The trenches were constructed at a total cost of INR 7 lakh, according to the CM’s dashboard.

Zunheboto has the most contour trenches built, covering a total area of 11 hectare at a total cost of INR 1.1 lakh covering 18 villages. Tuensang and Mokokchung has seven hectare of contour trenches built at a cost of INR 70,000 covering nine villages and six villages respectively.

Kohima has four hectare of contour trenches constructed covering six villages at a cost of INR 40,000, Phek has seven hectare covering five villages at a cost of INR 70,000, and Mon has eight hectare  constructed covering five villages at a cost of INR 80,000.

Meanwhile, Peren built a total of four hectares covering four villages for INR 40, 000, Wokha built a total of seven hectares of contour trenches covering four villages for INR 70,000.

Kiphire district has built four hectare covering three villages at a cost of INR 40,000, Dimapur built seven hectare covering three villages at a cost of INR 70,000, and Longleng has built four hectare of contour trenches covering two villages at a cost of INR 40,000.

These trenches help control the water from flooding downstream to farm areas, which helps in saving water and channeling it in the right direction. The water that percolates into these trenches after rainfall, keeps the soil moisture intact for a long time and may even extend to the following dry season, it said.

Under a similar scheme — Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) vermicompost scheme — Nagaland has also established a total of 96 vermicompost units in 65 villages at a cost of INR 48 lakh from 2021 to March 2022.

To facilitate the supply of organic input as vermicompost to farmers, the government proposed establishing as many vermicompost units as possible in potential areas throughout the state at progressive farmers’ fields under RKVY-RAFTAAR during 2018-2019.

While Zunheboto has 19 vermicompost units spread across 18 villages, Tuensang has nine units spread across nine villages, Mokokchung has nine units spread across six villages, Kohima has six units spread across six villages, and Phek has nine v units spread across five villages.

Mon has 10 vermicompost units in five villages, Peren has six in four villages, Wokha has nine in four villages, and Kiphire has six in three villages.

Dimapur has nine vermicompost units in three villages, while Longleng has four in two villages.
