Nagaland: 40.05 % coverage of households with tap water supply

Only 40.05 % of households in Nagaland have tap water supply with a total of 1,51,112 households covered against the total household of 3,77,286, according to the data from the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) dashboard.

In February 2022, the number of households provided with water supply in the state was 1, 48,506. In the initial year in August 2019, the total coverage was only at 13, 882 which was just 3.68% with the total remaining target of 3, 63, 404. At present the remaining target for the state is 2,26,174, which is at  59.54%.

JJM is being implemented by the department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Ministry of Jal shakti and has envisioned to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024 to all households in rural India.

While in the status of schools, Nagaland has 1,973 schools with tap water supply against the total 1,990 schools. The national data is 82.77 % with 8,51,568 schools with tap water supply against the total of 10,28,796.

For Anganwadis (AWCs), Nagaland has 1,726 AWCs with tap water supply against the total 3,980 centres, while the national data is 78.31%  with 8,75,000 having tap water supply against the total of 11,17,331 AWCs.

In the state, Wokha district had 16,506 households with tap water supply out of the target of 26,158 households, completing 63.10% of households. Next was Kiphire district at 54.83% coverage where 8,220 households had been provided with tap water supply out of 14,991 households; meanwhile Phek district had 17,361 households covered out of the 32,992 target households. 

Peren district was at the lowest with just 28.87% coverage where only 6,630 had been covered out of the target households of 22,964; Longleng district had 4,377 households covered out of the 14,153 target households leaving the district at 30.93%. Dimapur district was also at the bottom three just above Longleng district with 31.83% coverage. Out of the 56,734 target households, only 18,058 households have been provided with tap water supply in Dimapur so far. 

As per Nagaland’s financial progress in 2019 -2020, the assured and allocated fund from the centre was INR 56.49 crore and the state share was INR 6.28 crore with the total amount of INR 62.77 crore. It may be noted that the funding pattern for this mission is 90:10.

In 2020-21 the assured fund was INR 148.99 crore out of which INR 114.09 crore was allocated by the Centre with a state share of INR 16.56 crore. The total amount inclusive of the Centre and state share for the year 2020-21 was INR 165.55 crore out of which INR 101.95 crore was utilised and the available fund for that year was INR 120.47 crore.

In 2021-22, the assured fund was INR 473.33 crore out of which INR 444.81 crore was allocated by the Centre. The state share was INR 52.81 crore and the total assured fund inclusive of the Centre and state share was INR 526.14 crore out of which the expenditure cost was INR 238.57 crore and the available fund was INR 250.93 crore. 

Total number of households provided with tap water connection since launch of the Mission is 5,95,64,251 with 30.83% in the country.

Meanwhile, Goa; Telangana; Andaman and Nicobar Islands; Puducherry;  Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu(D&NH and D&D) and Haryana achieved 100% coverage under this mission while Uttar Pradesh have the least percentage of 13.41% having a status of 35,43,163 with 86 new connections against the total of 2,64,27,705 households.
