Dimapur, April 12 (EMN): The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has opposed the Parliamentary Official Language Committee’s proposal to impose Hindi as a component of modern Indian language (MIL) till Class 10 in the north-eastern states.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NSF said imposition of Hindi language will undermine the languages of ethic groups in the region.

‘Indigenous languages are the identity of the multiple communities and regions which have its rich values thus making Northeast a diverse region in all dimensions,’ it stated, adding that making Hindi a compulsory subject in the Northeast will only invite confusions, hurdles and discomfort for the student community and the Naga people in general as it has been an elective subject in the region.

So, the student body has urged “the Central government to revoke the decision in order to maintain peaceful co-existence and to avoid any further misunderstandings”.

“The federation shall spare no efforts to safeguard the interests and sentiments of the Naga people in particular and the NER in general as the entire region is against the proposed imposition,” it added.
