Motorola unveils new Moto G73 and Moto G53 android smartphones

Smartphone maker, Motorola, on Tuesday launched two new Android phones from its budget-centric G-series lineup, the Moto G73 and the Moto G53. The company recently revealed a new phone from its affordable E-series lineup but in this post, we’ll be delving into the details of the new Moto G73 and G53 models.

Moto G73

The new Moto G73 is powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 930 chip with a 5G sub-6GHz modem, a considerable upgrade over its predecessor, the Moto G72. The device boasts 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which is expandable up to 2TB via a microSD card. The phone runs Android 13 out of the box with Motorola’s My UX on top, which provides a near-stock Android experience but with added features like Moto actions.

On the rear, the camera system has undergone some changes as well. The 108MP camera from the previous model has been replaced with a 50MP sensor that boasts larger 1.0µm pixels (2.0µm with 4-in-1 binning). Additionally, there is an 8MP ultra-wide camera with a 118° field of view and autofocus, enabling macro photography. For selfie duties, there is a 16MP front-facing camera housed inside the punch hole of the display. The Moto G73 gets a deserved upgrade in the camera department, however, the device does not support 4K video capture which is a big disappointment.

Speaking of disappointment, the new Moto G73 features a 6.5″ IPS LCD panel that runs at a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,400px. This is a huge letdown considering that almost all budget Android phones in the same price range now feature AMOLED panels and the decision to keep using an LCD panel in 2023, even for a budget device like the Moto G73, is certainly going to be a deal breaker for most users. For comparison, the Moto G71, which was launched back in January of 2022, had an AMOLED panel.

Other notable features of the Moto G73 include a 5,000mAh battery, TurboPower 30, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi 5 (ac), Bluetooth 5.3 and NFC. The phone also gets a 30W charger included in the box.

Moto G53

The cheaper Moto G53 is now 5G capable as it is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480+ SoC. This is a huge upgrade over its predecessor, the Moto G52, which was a 4G device. The phone can be configured with 4, 6, or 8GB of RAM and 64 or 128GB of expandable storage. The display, however, is a 6.5″ LCD that boasts a resolution of 720 x 1,600px, which is a downgrade when compared to the G52’s 6.6” 90Hz AMOLED1080p display.

On the rear, the main camera is a 50MP sensor with smaller 0.64µm pixels and is capped at 1080p video capture at 30fps. It is accompanied by an 8MP ultrawide lens, but weirdly, it does not have autofocus. There is also a 16MP front-facing camera on the front for selfie duties.

The Moto G53 comes with a huge 5,000mAh battery but it only supports 10W charging, which is another big disappointment in our opinion.

Moto G73 and Moto G53 price and availability

The Moto G73 and G53 are set to be released in Europe shortly, with plans for a later launch in Latin America and Asia. The Moto G73 is expected to be priced at around INR 27,000 for the 8GB/256GB model and the Moto G53 is expected to be priced at around INR 22,000 for the base 4GB/128GB variant.

Final Thoughts

In summary, the Moto G73 and G53 have some upgraded features as compared to their predecessors, however, Motorola’s decision to go with LCD panels for both phones is not going to be attractive to potential buyers. There are other phones in the same price range that have better chipsets and high-refresh-rate AMOLED panels.
