Mokokchung, March 10 (EMN): With the objective of keeping Mopungchuket village and its surrounding areas pollution-free and plastic-free, members of the Mopungchuket Baptist Church’s youth ministry and a group called the Greensight Project on March 10 cleaned areas along Etitzüba, stated to be a “reserved river” in the area.
The river has a variety of fish and aquatic animals as well as exotic plants that contribute to the diverse ecosystem of the river, attracting wild animals. The river is also a place of beauty ideal for trekking. It has around five waterfalls along its course. Etitzüba is a tributary of the Milak River.
A total of 153 volunteers from the youth ministry, self-help groups, and village organisations, and Mopungchuket Baptist Church, among others participated in the work.
Volunteers collected around 2.7 metric tons of waste from along the 4-kilometre stretch of the river. It was observed that 60% of the waste consisted of fabric, 30% plastic pet bottles and multi-layered packaging and other waste materials.
The participants and the village community took an oath to keep the river clean, pollution-free and to reserve the river. The participants took home the message of influencing the society though the exercise and to continue to be brand ambassadors of cleanliness.
