MOKOKCHUNG— Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) has received a notice directing to vacate the dumping site within two years, informed ADC of Mokokchung and MMC administrator, Chumlamo Humtsoe, on Wednesday.

He disclosed this on the sideline of a launch programme of MMC mini truck–a Tata 610 SFC-to be utilised for sanitation services in Mokokchung town.

“We are in a tight situation; we cannot find land for dumping purposes. Nobody wants to give their land for garbage disposal. The only way out is we are trying to reduce the wet waste reaching the dumping sites which causes a lot of uncomfortable stench and is infested by flies,” Humtsoe said.

“In some wards, it has been made compulsory to initiate composting of wet waste in every household and only the dry waste should go to the dumping sites,” he said, adding that is how MMC is trying to reduce the wet waste reaching the dumping ground.

Humtsoe informed that MMC is implementing bio-remedies such as bio-chemicals for composting the waste at a quicker pace and reducing the stench and other flies infestation in the dumping site.

“We hope that such remedies will convince the landowners that we are putting all our efforts to reduce the stench and other flies infesting the dumping site and extend the usage of the site,” he appealed to the landowners.

He further disclosed that there is an existing retaining wall at the site but it falls short and not enough to contain the waste from reaching the streams. He stated that MMC has planned to raise the height of the retaining wall to contain the waste as and when the funds are made available.

Speaking at the launch programme, Humtsoe stated that the vehicle was acquired under 15th Finance Commission, which has been a long-felt need of MMC.

“We have just one working truck and facing a lot of difficulties. However, acquiring the new vehicles has fulfilled the long felt need of the town,” he said.

As Mokokchung town generates around 10-15 tonnes of waste, Humtsoe stated that one vehicle was not enough to meet the requirement to provide sanitation services in Mokokchung.

The vehicle was dedicated by Rev. Sentimeren, associate pastor of MTBA.
