Dimapur, Sep. 25: The minister for Rural Development Metsubo Jamir is said to feel ‘humbled’ and ‘relieved’ to see that there are youths who are not seeking government jobs but are trying to be self-reliant.

The legislator was addressing the “Antyodaya Diwas” programme of the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM) of the department of Rural Development at the Niathu Resort on Wed. Sep. 25 at 7th Mile in Dimapur.

Jamir remarked that the “saturation” in the government employment sector in Nagaland had reached its zenith. He expressed worry about what to do with the rest of the youths in Nagaland seeking government jobs.

Addressing trainees of the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDUGKY) scheme, Jamir said their decision to be self-employed would not only support them but also support the government without having to levy even a paisa on the state government. This he said was a ‘relief’ as the money ‘can be spent for other developmental activities in the state.’

‘By choosing to support themselves and not depending on the government, they are on the road to becoming their own bosses,’ Jamir told the youths. He reminded them that there are no ‘rags to riches’ stories of a government employment but only of those who chose to be self reliant and independent with their skills.

The legislator urged the youths to continue improving their skills and capability and let grow the institution of which they are part.

“Don’t be somebody whose society depends only on the government jobs but imbibe dignity of labour which starts from within you,” Jamir said.

The additional secretary of Rural Development, and mission director of the NSRLM Athel O Lotha gave the keynote address. She said that the observance of the “Antyodaya Diwas” was an important day for the NSRLM as it marks the commencement of the DDUGKY training programme.

According to the additional secretary, 722 people were trained in various trades during the past one-year. Out of it, 163 youths were placed in various companies across the country. Many more youths are expected to be trained in the coming years, she said. The official expressed hope that the DDUGKY would bring livelihood and enhance the economy of the state by creating channels of employment for rural youths.
