Imphal, Jan. 18 (EMN): The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Tuesday suspended senior MLA Khumukcham Joykishan Singh from primary membership of the party.

Joykishan Singh is a sitting congress MLA from Thangmeiband assembly constituency in Manipur’s Imphal West district, where the state’s capital and main commercial hub is located.

In an order issued on Jan. 18, 2022, the general secretary (admin.) of MPCC, Hareshwar Goshwami said that the president suspended Joykishan “on the recommendation of the Disciplinary Action Committee, MPCC.”

‘On the suspension, Kh Joykishan Singh ceases to be a primary member of Indian National Congress with immediate effect’, the order said, but it did not elaborate the reasons for the suspension.

Meanwhile, the elections to the 60 assembly constituencies of Manipur will be held on February 27 and March 3.

Joykishan, a 56-year-old politician, was elected for the first time from Thangmeiband assembly constituency on an All India Trinamool Congress ticket in 2012 polls.

Later, he joined the BJP in May 2015 and helped the party reopen its account in the state assembly in the mid-term polls (November, 2015).

He then resigned from the BJP in December 2016 and joined the congress and re-elected again on congress ticket in 2017 polls.

In the last polls, Congress emerged as the single largest party by winning 28 seats out of 60 seats. But despite winning 21 seats to Congress’s 28, BJP had been able to form a government in Manipur with support of four National People’s Party MLAs, four Naga People’s Front MLAs and one MLA each from Trinamool Congress, Lok Janshakti Party and an Independent.
