Manipur observes International Women’s Day

IMPHAL,March 8

International Women’s Day celebration was held across the state of Manipur today with a series of discussion on women’s role in the Manipuri society.
This year,International Women’s Day is themed “Make It Happen,” a much-needed call to get cracking on some of the biggest issues for women around the world.The All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association (AMWOVA) observed the day by holding a public function at the Manipur Dramatic Union Hall here. The Dean of social science of the Manipur University Prof Ksh Bimola, President of the Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Nupi lup President Ima Memchoubi and President of AMWOVA Y Kunjarani also attended the day’s observation.
Social activists speaking on the occasion stressed the need to take up initiatives for the empowerment of women in Manipur where women have a different role to play in a patriarchal society.
The Mahila congress unit of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee also observed the day wherein Tengnoupal MLA and former health minister DK Korungthang called upon the womenfolks not to misuse the women power by involving in many unwanted episodes in the state.
President of Mahila congress RK Ranisana believed that there will be a change once the society considers the importance of women’s role in our day to day life.
The Ima Panthoibi women street vendors association also observed the International Women’s Day in presence All India Trade Union Manipur state unit functionaries in Imphal by holding a discussion on the women’s issues in the State. The meeting of street vendors also demanded immediate functioning of the newly built Inter-State Bus Terminus in Imphal in public interest.
There are also reports of observing the International Women’s Day in other parts of the state.
