Manipur observes International Day Against Drug Abuse

IMPHAL, June 26: Appealing to the masses not to involve in drug abuse in the state, Manipur today observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Imphal where Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai attended as chief guest while functionaries of FINGODAP and CADA, both NGOs, as guests of honour respectively.

The District Legal Services Authority, Imphal East district, in association with Imphal East District Police and Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA), also organized the day by holding a pubic function at Imphal East police complex in presence of Deputy Commissioner Imphal East district M Joy, SP Imphal East Angam Kamei and MSLSA key functionary A Noutuneshwari Devi besides most of the police personnel and officers of the district.A cycle rally, which covers most of the important routes in Imphal to spread the message of the observation, was also organized by the Manipur University Students’ Union and Lions Club Canchipur in connection with the International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. The cycle rally, which was participated by more than 300 cyclists, was flagged off by Associate Prof N Mohilal of Manipur University’s Life Science Department in the morning.

Sajiwa Jail authority and Nirvana, an NGO, also jointly organized the day by holding a meeting at the Jail complex at Sajiwa in Imphal East district with the SP Jail W Phaniphat, NGO leader Sobhana and others.

Speaking on the occasion, Sajiwa Jail said that drug trafficking is the third largest illegal trade after Petroleum and Arms trade as per global reports.

People use to observe the day after UN General assembly on December 7, 1987, decided to observed June 26 as International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
