Legislator sad that Wokha’s famed mountain wears ‘Naga hair-cut’
Wokha, June 6 (EMN): Wokha town, a town of beauty, has now been left with its only famed mountain with a ‘Naga haircut,’ having been shorn of the lush forest it once used to wear, a legislator of the Lotha community has lamented.
Overlooking Wokha town is Mt. Tiyi, a mountain that was supposed to be a reserved forest once.
An organisation in the town, Tsumang-A Youth Organisation conducted an inter high school competition, a model-based project on the theme ‘beautification of Tsumang Lake’ on World Environment Day at the town’s hall in Wokha town in the morning.
Nine schools in the town participated with innovative projects each offering ideas about how the present deteriorated area located at the heart of town can be converted into a beauty spot for recreation to the locals besides making it a tourist attraction as well.
During the occasion legislator Dr. TM Lotha spoke about the natural beauty of Wokha. He asserted that ‘no other town had that beauty.’ He thank the organizers for the initiative involving school children to be part of preserving and making the town beautiful.
The legislator urged the people to be aware of issues such as Global Warming and Climatic Change whose impact can be seen even on the town. The citizens are failing to understand their contribution to the environment. For instance, deforestation has brought a challenge, the gathering was told.
According to the legislator, Wokha town has beautiful spots such as the Tsumang Lake and Etsuchukha, the natural spring, located at the heart of the town. Also, the mountain Mt. Tiyi which was supposed to be a reserved forest overlooking the town, he said, at present only has the look of a ‘Naga hair cut’ after ‘man’s ambitious and lack of awareness.’
Still, he said that it was never too late to take initiative to preserve the area’s nature. If initiatives are taken up by the community to preserve the environment, the government is always there to assist, he added.
The president of the Lotha Students’ Union Libemo M Tsopoe handed certificates to the participants of the competition. Don Bosco High Secondary School was adjudged the winner of the model-based project. Springtail High School came second while Cistus High School was placed at third. The event was followed by a plantation drive at the Tsumang Lake.
