Mokokchung, Nov. 16 (EMN): Judge of Gauhati High Court, Kohima bench, Justice S Serto, has called upon the legal fraternity to uphold their oath of allegiance and dispense justice to enable the people realise their rights and guide them to respect the law.

Speaking at the golden jubilee celebration of Mokokchung District Bar Association (MDBA) on November 16 at Mokokchung town hall on the theme “Reaching out,” Justice Serto asserted that a society is not measured by richness and wealth but measured by how people respect and obey the laws. In this regard, he urged the lawyers to uphold their oath and duties by helping people realise their rights and guide them to respect the law.

He warned that if the people do not know their rights in a democratic country, then it would be the start of having rulers. He added that when there is lawlessness, chaos would follow and one cannot expect peace and development to go forward.

“People who respect and obey the laws are one step ahead than the ones who do not follow law,” he said.

He also stated that absence of written law does not imply that there is no law but they are also unwritten law that people should respect. As laws change in tune with time, he stated that it is difficult to give up the old practices owing to human behavior but encouraged to adapt with the change.

Justice Serto also released the jubilee souvenir on the occasion.

B Tako Longkumer, founding member, stated that law is one among the noble professions of the world, while the deputy commissioner of Mokokchung, Shashank Pratap Singh, lauded the MDBA for reaching out to the people in need by spreading legal awareness in the district.

Somet C Chang, principal district and session judge of Mokokchung; A Zhimomi, MDBA president; Keron Janger, president of Dimapur Bar Association; also spoke  at the event.

Mayang Lima, Upa Lokayukta, spoke on the theme “Reaching out.”

MDBA was established in 1972 with six members with Late Tajenyuba Ao from Mangmetong village as the president and the retired deputy commissioner (judicial) L Sosang Jamir as the secretary.
