KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 28
Former champions Kohima Village Students’ Union (KVSU) hammered Modern College, Kohima by 5-0 to enter the pre-quarters of the ongoing NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy.
Playing the second match of the day, the former champions KVSU who lifted the cup in 1998, were at ease as they made it through to the round of 16.
KVSU dominated the proceedings of the match from the beginning and placed the college team on the receiving end all throughout the entire match. KVSU made successive attacks within the first quarter of the match and kept busy the opponent’s defenders. The former champions were lucky as an error own goal from Modern College defender Jacob Remeh helped them (KVSU) to take the first lead in the 14th minute.
Modern College team was made to take the back seat as Neikethozo Yhome scored the second goal for his team in the 23rd minute. Just before the interval, Mezhüsietuo Sekhose’s brilliant long range shot found the net in the 35th minute to end the first half with 3-0.Entering the second half, KVSU maintained no complacency as they went all out to humiliate the college team who lacked the skill to match their players. KVSU forward player Keviphretuo Kire gave his team another jubilation time as he scored in the 57th minute. However, just after the very next minute he scored, Keviphretuo Kire was cautioned with a yellow card in the 58th minute.
Even as Modern College defender Jacob Remeh have reasons to be disappointed for the own goal in the first half, the second half also didn’t go his way as he was penalized with a yellow card in the 60th minute for unfair play.
With just five minutes left for the final whistle, Dziesedilhou Yhome also joined the KVSU scoring list as he delivered in the 65th minute to seal the match in favour of KVSU.
Earlier in the first match, Laii Youth & Students’ Organization (LYSO), Manipur, overcame their rivals Get Them Go (GTG), Kohima by 1-0 to make their entry into the pre-quarters.
The match looked equally poised with both teams remaining goalless till the final quarter of the 70 minutes play until LYSO centre forward Luckyson’s cruelty befell upon the GTG in the 64th minute.
The match seemed to be heading for tie-break, however, LYSO found a saviour in Luckyson when he scored in the penultimate quarter. Luckyson’s goal shattered the hope of the GTG players leaving them fully demoralized.
GTG’s effort to fight back for the equalizer failed short as the solitary goal from the visiting team was enough to send them to the pre-quarters.
With the victory, Laii Youth & Students’ Organization will next play against Kohima Village Students’ Union in the round of 16.
