Dimapur, Oct. 29 (EMN): The Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) on Friday served a 15-day ultimatum to the government of Nagaland to deploy teachers and lecturers at three educational institutions – State Polytechnic Institute, Aboi; Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Mon; and Government Primary School (GPS) Ukha Changkong – in Mon district.

In an ultimatum dated October 29 and submitted to the chief minister through the deputy commissioner of Mon, the student body said the move was initiated over failure of the state government and the concerned authority in addressing its genuine demands.

The union stated that it had submitted a representation to the concerned director of the department for appointment of primary teacher at GPS Ukha Changkong, which has been left with no teachers since the voluntary resignation of the lone teacher on June 30, 2017.

It said that a private teacher was appointed for the school through the initiative of the Village Council and student union at their own expenses. It added that the issue was raised through the local dailies on September 30 this year but the government didn’t pay heed.

On the State Polytechnic Institute, Aboi, the KSU stated that the institute is still defunct due to shortage of lecturers and classes haven’t begun yet for this academic session though students have been admitted, while similar institute in other district has already started functioning.

The union went on to state that it had requested the concerned authority through a representation on August 10 this year to appoint Science and Mathematics teachers in the high school section and Sociology teacher in the secondary section at the GHSS, Mon, but no response on the matter so far.

It asked how a school with 580 students (from classes 7 to 10) can function with a one science teacher and without a mathematics teacher since August 2020 following the retirement of former teachers.

“The union is dismayed by the silence of the concerned authority even after issuing a reminder in the local dailies dated 30th September 2021 with regard to the shortage of Sociology teacher in the secondary section,” read the ultimatum, adding that it has been some months since classes have begun in higher secondary schools but the GHSS Mon is still doesn’t have a Sociology teacher.

Citing these reasons, the union has issued an ultimatum to the state government to immediately appoint primary teachers at GPS Ukha Changkong; to immediately begin classes for academic session 2021-22 at the polytechnic institute Aboi with adequate number of lecturers; and to appoint Mathematics and Science teachers for high school section and   Sociology PGT for higher secondary section at GHSS, Mon, within 15 days from the issuance of its letter dated October 29.

The KSU stated that it would be left with no option but to resort to democratic forms of agitation till their demands are fulfilled. It added that the state government and the concerned department will be held solely responsible in the event of any untoward situation arising out of the failure to meet its demands.
