Kohima looks to brighter days with efficient energy program

Dimapur, August 16: To mark the occasion of Independence Day, the Kohima district administration has launched a program called “energy efficient Kohima.” The program was launched at the deputy commissioner’s conference hall in Kohima on August 15.
The program was initiated by the district administration of Kohima in collaboration with the Energy Efficient Service Limited (EESL), a public sector body of Government of India implementing the UJALA scheme.
The deputy commissioner of Kohima, Rovilatuo Mor, said in his short speech that the initiative was undertaken for the benefit of power consumers in the district. Under the program, LED bulbs would be distributed to select villages at a subsidized rate of Rs. 70 per bulb (the market price is Rs. 699).
For selected ‘welfare homes’, they would be issued the same for free. Expenses for transportation will be borne by the district administration.
The deputy commissioner assured that the use of LED bulbs would consume less electricity and would drastically reduce electricity bill and save power consumption in the district. He also informed that the EESL was in the process for implementation of the UJALA scheme in Nagaland with the Government of Nagaland.Mor further appreciated the idea of universal use of LED bulbs in the state. The idea would have positive impact on Climate Change and the ‘environment sectors’ in the state, he said.
With the launch of “Energy Efficient Kohima”, the administration hopes that it would go a long way in ‘strengthening energy power consumption in the district.’ He urged the selected beneficiaries to ensure that while issuing the LED bulbs to the villagers, the names of the individuals receiving them and the price of the LED bulbs should be properly recorded and maintained.
He also informed that the district administrators of areas in concern would cross check and verify the status of the implementation in their respective areas. The DC also asked the beneficiaries to give feedbacks on the electricity bill after using the LED bulbs in order to ensure its benefits and to further cover all the villages and towns of the district. Rovilatuo hoped that the beneficiaries would extend their utmost cooperation and transparency for the successful implementation of this initiative.
During the day’s event, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the district administration of Kohima and the EESL to cover all the villages and towns of the district ‘as long as implementation was practicable.’
Additional Commissioner Reny Wilfred IAS (P) who gave a brief report on the initiative said that the initiative towards “Energy Efficient Kohima” was taken up to solve the power consumption issue and transformer overload problems. He believed that with the launching of the project the expenditure of Kohima household would come down, which would enable every household to install LED bulbs in days to come.
EESL officials from Kolkata also spo0ke about the success story of LED bulbs implementation in other states so far. He also highlighted the aims and objective of the National UJALA Scheme under the Union Ministry of Power, Government of India.
The beneficiaries included Kezo Basa; Dzülakie; Chedema; Thekrüjuma; KCCI; Old Age Home; Kohima Orphanage & Destitute Homes; Eden Garden, Khuzama, Aids Hospice, Home Gilead and Bright Morning Star Orphanage Home.
