Dimapur, June 7 (EMN): Kohima Law College observed the ‘World Food Safety Day’ with a demand to set up a hygienic slaughter house in the state capital Kohima befitting a smart city to ensure safer food especially meat with round the clock monitoring by veterinary officials.

Kohima Law College observed the ‘World Food Safety Day’ on June 7 at the college premises on the theme ‘Safer food, better health.’ An update from the college stated that under the Consumer Protection Act 2019, consumers have the right to safety so that they are protected against marketing of goods and services which are hazardous to life. It added that goods which are hazardous to health are illegal and punishable.

It also urged upon the state government to ensure safe and nutritious food for all, while it also urged the business operators to ensure that food is safe. It added that all should all work together for safe food and good health.

Presenting a keynote address, consumer activist and assistant professor of Kohima Law College, Kezhokhoto Savi, stated that the day is observed to draw attention and mobilise action to prevent, detect and manage food-borne risks and improve human health. The observation of this event with the rest of the world was to raise awareness of the health hazards associated with unsafe food and to highlight the significance of hygiene in daily life, Savi said. He, therefore, stated that safer food is the key to better human health.

Savi suggested that it would be best for the food business operators (FBO) to bring their products, food items, samples and get tested at the state public health laboratory before they are sold to the consumers. He added that every consumer should take the responsibility to complain in case of any sub-standard foods including duplication or inferior quality and for any adulterated items.

He further informed about the state consumer helpline with toll free No. 1800 – 345 – 3701, which functions as an alternate remedy mechanism.
