Kohima, May 28 (EMN): In an effort to conserve wildlife, Khonoma Youth Organisation (KYO) under Kohima district donated two bear cubs to the Nagaland Zoological Park (NZP), Dimapur, on May 28.

In a brief handing-over function at Gen. Movu Memorial on the outskirts of Khonoma village, KYO president Mhasilhoukho Yalie said that the organisation strictly enforces the conservation and preservation regulations by initiating action against the defaulters. He stated that the 2-3 months old cubs were rescued by three youths of the village some two weeks back while on routine duty to inspect Mithun conservation in the forest of the village.

He stated that the two youths brought the cubs to the village and handed over to the KYO, which was subsequently donated to NZP.

Meanwhile, the Dimapur Wildlife Ranger Tokaho Kinimi, on behalf of the Chief Wildlife Conservator, lauded KYO on their conservation efforts. He also lauded Khonoma village for taking the lead in conserving wildlife in the state. He assured all possible help to the KYO in its effort to conserve and preserve wildlife.

Director of Nagaland Zoological Park, Rangapahar, Dr. Prabhat Kumar said the community involvement of Khonoma in conservation and preservation of wildlife was exemplary which is worth emulating by other districts.

“Handing over of the cubs to NZP showed the seriousness of the village in wildlife conservation efforts,” he said. He further assured all possible efforts towards the upkeep of the cubs.

Chaired by KYO member Zakie Khate, the brief handing-over programme began with a prayer said by KYO advisor Kevikielie Pier.
