Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament: Tehok drub Aphuyemi 5 – 1

The 6th edition of Capt. Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament got underway on Tuesday evening at IG Stadium in Kohima.

In the inaugural match, defending champions Tehok FC from Mon trounced Aphuyemi FC of Zunheboto 5-1.

Laiwang and Rhitsho Mero scored a brace each while Kethosilie Zatsu added another goal for Tehok FC to clinch the victory.

The face-saving goal for Aphuyemi FC came through the boots of Yekivi.

Speaking at the inaugural programme, Maj. Gen. Vikas Lakhera, IGAR (N), recalled the heroic act of Capt (Late) N Kenguruse, MVC (P) who made the supreme sacrifice on the icy heights of Drass during Op. Vijay in 1999.

He lauded Neiselie Kenguruse and his wife, the parents of late Kenguruse, saying that their valiant son from Nagaland has inspired numerous youths from the state to don the uniform and serve the nation with pride.

He also expressed gratitude to Subedar (Hon. Capt) Imli Akum Ao, Maha Vir Chakra, who recently retired from 2nd Battalion of the Naga Regiment, who was awarded MVC for his exceptional gallantry and courage in the Kargil Conflict in 1999.

“I am sanguine that these men in uniform will always keep inspiring the generations for excelling in various fields and bringing laurels to the country and to their families,” the officer said.

Apprising that the tournament is being organised by Assam Rifles on behalf of 3 Corps, he conveyed best wishes on behalf of Lt. Gen. RC Tiwari, GOC, 3 Corps, to all the participating teams and the organisers.

Eighteen teams from different districts of the state are participating in the nine-day long tournament.

The winners’ trophy and runner-up trophy were unveiled during the ceremony. Winning team will get cash prize of INR 2 Lakh along with the rolling trophy.

  • Head Hunters FC vs Medziphema FC (12 noon)
  • Naga United FC vs Lengreng FC (4 pm)
