JFI honours Lourembam’s achievements with running trophy

Judo Federation of India (JFI) will be dedicating a running trophy in the name of Manipuri judoka Lourembam Brojeshwori Devi, the first Judoka Olympian of the country, in the national championship.Newly elected President Mukesh Kumar of JFI soon after the federation meeting in Imphal this afternoon said they’ve taken a decision in this regard following a proposal. It would be an honour to dedicate the trophy recognizing her achievement in the game of judo, he felt.
Initially Secretary S Indrakumar of Manipur Judo Association made a proposal to JFI to dedicate a running trophy in the name of Brojeshwori, the first Judoka Olympian of the country, who passed away on July 22 at Coimbatore in an accident.
She participated in the Sydney Olympics 2000 and became the first woman Judoka player of the country to take part in an Olympics.
Born in January 1981 at Khagempalli to Lourembam Manglem and Taruni Devi, she entered into the discipline of players early in life and later went on to win numerous medals in various national and international events.
She got married to Thongam Rojen of Toubungkhok in 2011. Brojeshwori was working as an Inspector in the CRPF and was posted in Delhi.
However, she passed away in Coimbatore when she was undergoing training for promotion to Assistant Commandant.
