KOHIMA, AUGUST 18: In its endeavour to prevent and alleviate human sufferings, to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for fellow human being and promotion of a culture of non-violence and peace, members of the Red Cross Society were reminded of the seven fundamental principles of ‘humanity,’ ‘impartiality,’ ‘neutrality,’ ‘independence,’ ‘unity,’ ‘universality,’ and ‘volunteer services.’
This reminders were made during the annual general meeting ceremonial function of the Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland State Branch (IRCSN) today at Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan, Kohima.
During the ceremonial programme, twelve patrons and four vice patrons from the districts of Peren, Zunheboto, Kohima and Dimapur were decorated by the State Governor, PB Acharya, who is also the president of IRCSN, and the State Chief Minister, TR Zeliang, vice president IRCSN.While appreciating the active members of IRCSN for their tireless efforts in providing invaluable services and assistance to the people in need, Zeliang, in his speech, reminded the members on the adverse effect of global warming and climate change on humanity which is threatening the ultimate survival of humanity on this earth.
In this regard, he asked the Red Cross to join the ‘Green Campaign’ and actively support initiatives and interventions by the government and non-governmental agencies that would bring about mitigations and adaptations to climate change.
He also urged the members against the practice of any discrimination in their services to humanity and also against taking any sides in hostilities or engage in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature.
Expressing his happiness on the enrolment of 150 new members during the year 2016-16, Zeliang at the same time, pointed out that it could have done much better considering the number of prospective members in a state like Nagaland.
Deputy Commissioners of the district, also the chairman of district branches, were reminded to take more proactive role in the members enrolment drive and also to expand the vision and reach of IRCSN in their respective districts.
Stressing on the need to expand its activities even to the remote corners of the State, Acharya, in his presidential address, said Nagas have the potential to stride ahead and become one of the most progressive states in the country.
Welcoming the newly inducted members, Acharya termed the movement of Red Cross on the same wavelength as that of teachers and doctors whose services were considered as the ‘noblest profession.’ While maintaining that the tasks were not easy, he urged upon the members to focus on bigger agenda for the future instead of a being a stagnant service delivering organisation.
He asserted that Red Cross movement in the state should grow with a vision to reach out to more and more people.
Chairperson of IRCSN, Abeni TCK, stressed on the need for a change of mindset instead of always expecting from somebody else but to rise above self to adopt a philosophy of giving, sacrifice and service to humanity.
General Secretary IRCSN, Dr Kepelhusie Terhüja, presented a report on the business session held on August 17, while member of the managing committee IRCSN, CR Lotha, delivered the welcome address and Helena Yepthomi, proposed the vote of thanks.
The gathering was enthralled with special numbers presented by Eldah Voice, Chakhesang Baptist Church, New Ministers Hill, Kohima and Music Ministry, Chang Baptist Church, Kohima.
