India’s Omicron tally breaches 3000-mark; new cases cross 1 lakh

The total number of highly transmissible Covid variant Omicron cases has increased to 3007 in India with 377 new cases reported in the past 24 hours, said Union health ministry in its update on Friday morning.

Of the total, 1,199 people have either recovered from the new strain so far or migrated, it added.

The update informed that the variant of concern has spread to 27 states and UTs in the country. Maharashtra tops the chart with 876 Omicron cases, followed by Delhi (465), Karnataka (333), Rajasthan (291) and Kerala (284).

Assam registers 7 new Omicron cases

Among the north-eastern states, Assam’s Omicron tally has been pushed to nine following seven more fresh cases of the variant being reported in the past 24 hours. Six patients had no travel history while one had returned from a foreign country, according to National Health Mission Director Lakshmanan S.

Meghalaya has four Omicron cases and Manipur, 1, so far while the rest of the NE states have not reported any cases of the new strain.

India logs 1.17 lakh new cases

A total of 1,17,100 new Covid-19 cases were reported in India in the last 24 hours, taking the country’s tally to 3,52,26,386 and active caseload to 3,71,363, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country last reported more than one lakh new cases in a single day when 1,00,636 infections were registered on June 7, 2021.

The Health ministry also informed that 302 fresh fatalities were reported in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 4,83,178, while the total recoveries has increased to 3,43,71,845 with recuperation of 30,836 patients.

As many as 149.66 crore vaccine doses have been administered across the country so far, it added.
