IMPHAL — The Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Tamenglong district, has appealed to the people of Tamenglong to take precautions and ensure safety, amid inclement weather forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to IMD weather bulletin, thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places of Tamenglong district on June 18, cautioning that it could pose a danger to the people.

The district administration advised the people to re-enforce old doors and windows, secure any loose objects around their homes, and stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. Outdoor activities such as agriculture and fishing should be postponed until the weather improves. It is critical to avoid flood-prone and landslide-prone areas, rivers, and streams, and to move to safer locations if needed, it cautioned.

It also stressed the importance of seeking immediate shelter in a secure place; avoiding elevated areas, isolated trees and bodies of water’ and staying away from windows, doors and concrete floors while indoors.

It went on to advice the people to unplug electrical appliances and avoid using corded phones during the storm. Travelers are encouraged to postpone trips if thunderstorms are forecast and to seek shelter in safe buildings or vehicles if caught in a storm. Those in vehicles should keep all windows up and remain inside until the storm passes.

On Monday, Tamenglong district witnessed partial rainfall in the town area, while it was intense in some parts of Bishnupur district. However, no untoward incident was reported.

“Some churches in Tamenglong town have cancelled Vacation Bible School (VBS) as there’s warning of heavy rain (on June 18),” said a resident of Tamenglong when contacted over the phone on Monday. “Most schools are on summer vacation, except for some special coaching classes.”
