Dimapur, March 29 (EMN): Nagaland state board of the International Human Rights Council (IHRC) has requested everyone to uphold the core tenets of human rights while carrying out their assigned tasks and ensure that the fundamental rights of a human is not violated in these unique times.

The group has lauded the frontline workers led by health experts and caregivers, who have been called upon to carry out an enormous task against an unseen and a ruthless enemy. It also saluted the police personnel, who have been tasked with dual responsibility to act in a humane way beyond their usual call of acting as law enforcers.

It also called upon not forget those who are making all efforts to ensure delivery of essential needs of the people, be it transporters, shopkeepers, delivery boys and members of the media saying those people are as essential in the collective fight against the new and dangerous virus that has attacked the world so suddenly.

The organisation, in a press release issued by its president Akavi N Zhimomi, has urged the leaders to act with selflessness so that their decisions are based solely on science and no other motive.

In this regard, the organisation has requested the government led by the chief minister, the administration led by the chief secretary and all the leaders of the civil societies to be transparent in all their dealings and interactions.

It also urged the government to keep an ambulance at standby for any emergencies and also ensure that the patients suffering from other illness do not face problem to get their medicines due to the nation-wide lockdown.

It has also urged the government to provide rice and other necessary essential items under special case to those thousands of college and school children from other districts who are stranded in Dimapur and in Kohima districts.

Besides, it has also urged the government to provide food and shelter to those stranded people at railway station and at hotels. It demanded that the homeless people should be provided with food and necessary arrangements for accommodation because they are the most vulnerable and prone to the deadly disease.

While some families, including thousands of autorickshaw drivers, who are fully dependent on daily wage and may not be in position to even buy food, it urged the government to make basic arrangements especially for them.

It also urged the village guards and volunteers to follow precautions and standard operating measures by maintaining social distancing and ensure that citizens are not harassed.

The organisation has also appealed to the government to make Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs) available for the medical personnel and distributed to all the district hospitals for those who are at the frontline battling the deadly disease. It also urged the government to urgently set-up Covid-19 testing centre in Nagaland.

The organisation also suggested that the idea of deduction of one-day salary from the government employees should be dropped but instead be given additional special allowances to the traffic, police and medical personnel during the lockdown period.

It further urged the district administration and municipal councils to fumigate the streets and public places at large scale at regular intervals.

The organisation has requested every citizen to care for each other and act selflessly towards fellow human beings so that the people come out of this unique time in history as a more mature and healthy state.
