A sniffer dog today helped troops of 45 Assam Rifles in detection of a powerful IED which was planted by suspected rebels on a culvert along the Imphal-Ukhrul road close to Shajiwa Jail in Imphal East district.
The IED which was later defused and disposed by bomb experts of the Assam Rifles was weighted around 2.5 kg, said police who suspect it was planted by rebels with an intention to target security forces moving on the road.
The IED packed in an iron container was found planted at a garbage dumping site near the culvert and it was confirmed to be IED after bomb experts of the Assam Rifles examined after the sniffer dog accompanied troopers of 45 Assam Rifles on ROP duty signaled of its being explosives.The IED was detected this morning around 6.30 am and as part of precautionary measure, troops of Assam Rifles blocked traffic till around 9.45 am until the bomb experts detonated it safely.
Meanwhile, three mortar shells were discovered by labourers engaging in the road repairing works at Heirok in Thoubal district this morning around 8.30 am.
Reports said that the labourers found the mortar shells lying at a place on the road side which is only few meters away from a post of the Border Security Force (BSF)Personnel of the state police bomb detection and disposal squad disposed the shells in the paddy field later this afternoon around 12.30 pm.
