Mokokchung, March 24 (EMN):
A three-storied house was gutted in a massive fire at Longchara sector, near Changtongya town under Mokokchung district on Thursday morning.

According to the Changtongya Police Station OC report, the house belonged to Meren Paul, retired Transport Commissioner, Nagaland.

‘The fire ignited from the middle floor around 5:30 am; since the building is an old structured one, the fire immediately engulfed the other floors’, he said.

Only a tenant lives on the ground floor, he added.

‘After hectic efforts from volunteers and police personnel from Changtongya, the fire was brought under control and prevented from spreading to nearby houses but we could not evacuate the property stored in top floors’, the OC narrated.

Onlookers said that volunteers even transported water in their vehicles to douse the fire.

It took less than 30 minutes for the fire to engulf the entire house, they added.

The OC also informed that Changtongya town does not have a Fire and Emergency Services station, and the nearest fire station is in Tuli town, which takes around two hours to reach Changtongya.

It is suspected that a short circuit might be the reason behind the incident; however, property damaged by the fire could not be ascertained.

The OC also added that an FIR report has been received at Changtongya Police Station.
