Dimapur, Oct. 28: Far from the hustle and bustle of city life, people in the rural areas go through difficulties when it comes to medical facilities. In spite of that, a healthcare centre at Yongnyah village in Longleng district is still going strong, as it celebrated 50 years of service—and got a new building. The jubilee was marked by the inauguration of a new building for the primary health centre (PHC), on Sat. Oct. 28.

A report from the event states about the centre: ‘Established in 1967, after a proposal for creation of dispensary at Yongnyah village for the welfare of five villages under Yongnyah block—Nyang, Tangha, Yongshei, Yongnyah and Yongam was submitted to civil surgeon of Tuensang by area council member. The state government the same year approved to establish a new dispensary at Yongnyah village under Longleng sub-division, Tuensang district in 1968.’

The district vector borne officer (DVBO) of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme for Longleng district, Dr Manyau Phom, is said to be the first medical officer for the newly upgraded centre in Yongnyah back in 1997.

Dr. Phom has sought cooperation from the community and stakeholders to strengthen the centre. He congratulated the medical officers and staffs posted there for bringing improvement in the healthcare delivery system to the remote area.

Yesterday, at the village, the chief medical officer of Longleng Dr. Kongyan Phom who was the special guest at the inauguration thanked the Health and Family Welfare dept. for constructing the new building.

Dr. Kongyan asked the PHC’s staff to be in station to provide health services. The officer requested the community and neighbouring villages to avail the services and to cooperate even in the future.

The subdivision officer (civil) for Longleng, Robin, was the special guest of the 50th golden jubilee celebration. In his address, the administrator lauded the initiative of the area’s pioneers and former medical officers and staff. He remarked that the day’s celebration was a result of their hard work and contribution.

The administrator asked the community not to consider the PHC a government office but to take care of it as their personal property.

The medical officer of the centre, Dr K Manen Phom, said in his address that the new building was constructed in 2013 funded by the National Health Mission, and built on land donated by the Ngonyen clan of Yongjong, and Oman Morung of Yongnyah village.
