Heavy rainfall and hailstorm on Tuesday reportedly damaged at least 40 houses in Nagaland’s Phek district.

Following the update from the India Meteorological Department with regard to widespread rainfall, hailstorms, lightning and thunder over parts of Indian states including Nagaland, some villages in Phek district experienced violent hailstorm accompanied by rainfall, which disrupted daily activities and damaged several houses.

The massive hailstorm hit villages under the sub-divisions of Chozuba and Pfütsero in Phek district. Some of the affected villages included Zapami, Thipuzu, Khulazu Basa, Thenyizu, and Khutsami.

President of Khulazu Basa Students’ Union, Meyohü Chüzho told Eastern Mirror that about 43 houses were reported damaged by the hailstorm and heavy rainfall. Some of the families were even rendered homeless.

The hails started showering at around 12:20 noon and lasted for 40 minutes, another resident of the village, said. After the hailstorm subsided, village members put up tarpaulins in some of the damaged houses, the person added.

While light hailstorm is a common occurrence annually, the village did not experience hails of such magnitude for years, a senior citizen from the village observed.
