Assam Governor lauds Diphu-based NGO for promoting millets

Diphu, Nov. 21 (EMN): The Governor of Assam, Jagadish Mukhi and Finance Minister of Assam, Ajanta Neog praised Jirsong Asong, a Diphu-based NGO in Karbi Anglong, for promoting millet cultivation in Karbi Anglong district.

The two dignitaries were visiting the stall put-up by Jirsong Asong during a programme commemorating the International Year of Millets, 2023 organised by NABARD, regional office, to support projects on millets across the state at Vivanta Taj, Guwahati.

It was a one-day affair, where six selected NGOs promoting cultivation of millet were invited to put-up their stalls for demonstration of their products.

The programme started with the lighting of the inaugural lamp by the Governor, Jagadish Mukhi and Finance Minister, Ajanta Neog. The welcome address was delivered by Chief General Manager, NABARD, Naveen Dhingra.

The Governor released the State Focus Paper 2023-24.

Director, Jirsong Asong, Fr. Tangkachan said for the initial stage, the Jirsong Asong has distributed millet seeds to local farmers of Lumbajong Block, where farmers cultivated and harvested millets.

He said the Jirsong Asong is trying to promote millet cultivation in Karbi Anglong and is targeting around 3000 farmers for the next cultivating season. The millet crop is climate resilient, which can adjust with the climatic condition of the place. Millet is a nutritious food and improves the health of persons. Millet can prepare cakes, biscuits and other varieties, the director said. It is around INR 200 per kg, he said.

The inaugural session ended with a vote of thanks by General Manager (GM), NABARD, Nabin Kumar Roy.

In the second session, there was presentation on development perceptions of NABARD by the GM, Nabin Kumar Roy and Assistant General Manager (AGM), Sankar Das; presentation on infrastructure support by Deputy General Manager (DGM), Bhaskar Manta and Assistant Manager (AM), Devesh Tewari and presentation on critical interventions of NABARD by AGM, Biswajit Deb and AM, Ankita Modhukalya.
