Dimapur, June 22: The Inner Wheel Park of the Dimapur Municipal Council’s (DMC) “A Better Dimapur” project was inaugurated on Sat. June 22 outside the Dimapur Club.
The project to transform the site into a park was undertaken by a group called the Inner Wheel Club of Dimapur, and was inaugurated by Nagaland Post’s editor-in- chief Geoffrey Yaden.
The ‘Inner Wheel Park’ as it is called now before it was a park, used to be a site for people to dispose waste. It was converted into a park during a period of 15 days. It is a stretch of 190 feet adorned in mural paintings, and saplings.
It has a cemented floor and reinforced with bricks. The site has a swing too.
The park cost around INR three lakh to build, the chairman of the project Dr. Khushboo Agarwal said. The murals were created by an artist Sentiyanger Longkumer.
In his address, Yaden noted that Dimapur had been experiencing innovative way of discouraging waste since the DMC “A Better Dimapur” project began. Such project and ideas he said will open economic avenues for people especially the unemployed.
Saying that the habit of littering has become part of routine, which will take people some time to reject, he said if individuals take responsibility of their actions things will change.
‘If we work together, we can find solutions,’ he said.
The administrator of the DMC Moa Sangtam also spoke at the event. He said the idea behind the project was to encourage people to come together and contribute to make Dimapur ‘better.’
Sangtam reminded that the project was not the DMC’s alone but the community’s. He urged the citizens to continue maintaining the project and not shirk responsibility now that the project has been completed.
