Dimapur, Aug. 26 (EMN): The 16th Football Mongmong Tournament organised by the Kiphire Area Students’ Union (KASU), in tribute to Lt. Sepithong Sangtam, head GB, Kiphire district, kicked off at the Kiphire local ground on August 23, with Deputy Commissioner Kiphire, M. Shayung Phom as the special guest. This was stated in an update from the DIPR on Monday.
Phom in his speech said the tournament will help youths to explore and showcase their talent. He pointed out that though the name of the tournament is ‘football mongmong tournament’ it has to be kept in mind that the tournament belongs to all irrespective of religion, race and culture. This football festival should bring people together in a true spirit of brotherhood and sportsmanship, let the festival be a festival of football, he added.
Stating that the lack of infrastructure was hindering the progress, he expressed hope that organising such tournament will give platforms to the youths to further hone their talents. He urged upon the players to take the opportunity to learn from their fellow players as it is through sports friendship is created and barriers are broken.
In the first match, Legends FC defeated Yeye sports club 2-1.
Altogether 13 clubs are participating in the tournament.
