First palliative care unit in Northeast inaugurated in Imphal

The first ever palliative care unit in a private hospital in the entire Northeastern region was formally inaugurated at Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (SHRI)at Langol in the outskirts of Imphal on Wednesday.

Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Palin Khundongbam of SHRI, its superintendent Dr. S Jugindra Singh, Palliative Care specialist Dr. Nandan Choudhary, Roger Khoirom were present during the formal inauguration of the unit.

Later briefing media, Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Palin Khundongbam of SHRI informed that the objective of opening such a palliative care unit is to provide specialised care facilities to incurable illnesses as the population need such facilities to lead a quality life.

“We’ve dedicated four beds in our hospital,” he said.

The newly opened palliative care unit is planning to provide palliative care and other services such as severe pain management, supportive care for cancer patients, end stage liver or lung disease, heart failure besides the incurable ones that require hospitalisation, he said.

On the functioning of the new unit, Dr. S Jugindra of SHRI, said that Dr. Nandan, the only qualified specialist in this field in the entire Northeast India will look after the department and newly opened unit.

“We’ve even got the indication of starting training programmes on palliative care for the doctors of the region and neighbouring country considering its requirement,” Dr. Jugindra who had led a team in rendering home visit palliative care services free of cost since 2015, said.

Last month, the first ever home-grown private medical college in Northeast ‘Shija Academy of Health Sciences’ with an intake capacity of 150 students (63 state government quota seats) was also inaugurated at Langol in the outskirts of Manipur capital.

There are about 35,396 registered doctors against the requirement of 45,000 in the entire Northeast as the World Health Organisation recommended doctor to population ratio of 1: 1000.

Presently there are about 16 medical colleges (including eight in Assam, two each in Manipur and Tripura) in Northeast India including Sikkim.
